Well-maintained hiking trails with great (water) views

The Laintal is romantic and therefore very nice for a hike. The Lainbach waterfall is certainly not one of the largest waterfalls in Bavaria, but it is beautiful.

The Laintal waterfall can be reached from the center of Mittenwald via a short hike (walking time approx. half an hour). Simply follow the signs towards Lautersee through the Laintal. The waterfall is about halfway between Mittenwald and Lautersee.

The Mittenwald Gorge Kiosk marks the eastern exit of the Leutasch Ghost Gorge. Maybe a little refreshment before visiting the waterfall trail? €3 is charged for each adult. Children pay half. The gorge is much narrower here and the path leads directly above the Leutasch to the waterfall. Past a statue of the Virgin Mary, you quickly reach the 23-meter-high waterfall.

Fantastically beautiful - the waterfall is 40m high in total, and the main fall is 15m.

The gorge used to be used for timber drifting. It was a very difficult task to transport the logs through the narrow gorge into the valley. In early summer, the meltwater was dammed at the beginning of the Gleirschklamm at the so-called “Klausen”, the logs were lowered into the water and after the necessary water level was reached, the Klausentor was opened in one fell swoop. The trunks shot with a powerful rush of water through the gorge out of the valley of the Isar towards Scharnitz. The logs often became wedged in the gorge and had to be painstakingly repositioned by the experienced men, the so-called drifters. Today only the information boards remind us of this dangerous work, in which many men were injured and died.
