The Engelszell monastery was founded in 1293 by Wernhart von Prambach. After the plague (1570) and a devastating fire (1699), the monastery was dissolved in 1786. In 1925, the Trappists resettled there and since then it has been the only Trappist monastery in Austria. The monastery church is one of the most impressive and stylistically purest Rococo churches in Austria. It was built between 1754 and 1764 and is furnished with valuable works of art by Johann Georg Üblher, Joseph Deutschmann and Bartolomeo Altomonte. A new choir organ has been in place since 1992 and a new, large organ has been in place since 1996. The famous Engelszell monastery liqueurs, which are made by the monks according to old recipes, are a rarity. Since 2012, Trappist beer has been brewed again in the monastery in various varieties.
