Melk's town square forms the historic and vibrant center of the town. Surrounded by well-preserved house facades, cafés, and shops, it invites you to stroll and linger. Particularly striking is its proximity to Melk Abbey, which towers high above the square. The view of Melk Abbey is an impressive experience that highlights both the historical and architectural significance of this baroque jewel. Melk Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, towers majestically above the Danube and is a landmark of the Wachau region.

Down opposite the bridge, next to the tourist office, you can use the lockers for €1 per compartment. You don't get the euro back. Here, 2 saddlebags, a helmet and a few other small items fit in one compartment. Up at the pen, there are also lockers on the bike rack, but only 1 saddlebag fits in each one.

It's simply a wonderful sight when you've completed a long walk on the World Heritage Trail and then come out of the floodplain forest to the bridge near Melk. The monastery sits majestically on the hill and you can immediately sense how hikers must have felt in the 18th century when they arrived here after a long pilgrimage.
