The main square was built around 1230 and is now 219 m long and 60 m wide. Over the course of its history, today's main square has had a variety of different names. Originally it was called An dem Markt, which is documented in 1338. The north side of the square on the Danube was called Heubühel (1439). In the 15th century the name Am Platz is documented, later the name Großer Platz. At the beginning of the 19th century it was renamed Hauptplatz.

Linz's main square is one of the largest squares in Austria. It represents the city center of Linz. The square is only separated from the Danube by the bridgehead buildings. The main square is home to apartment buildings, commercial establishments, offices and doctor's offices. The Holy Trinity Column (often referred to as the Plague Column) in the middle of the square is one of the city's landmarks. It was built between 1717 and 1723 by the master builder Sebastian Stumpfegger and is intended to commemorate the city of Linz's sparing from the plague during the outbreak in 1713. https://www.linzwiki.at/wiki/Hauptplatz/

An impressive facility and also an impressive building. The Abwinden-Asten power plant is a run-of-river power plant, belongs to the Austrian Danube power plants and was built between 1976 and 1979. Nine sets of machines in the machine house supply electricity to the public power grid. The standard working capacity is 995 million kWh per year.

From the Danube Cycle Path, an impressive view opens up of the Linz Industrial Park – one of Austria's most important industrial areas and a key economic driver for the city of Linz. Numerous companies, primarily from the chemical and plastics industries, are located here, covering an area of approximately one square kilometer. Thanks to its excellent transport connections – with direct access to the motorway and rail network as well as the Danube tank port – the chemical park plays a crucial role in the country's industrial infrastructure. Despite its industrial backdrop, Linz boasts a lovingly preserved old town, modern cultural offerings, and superb cycle paths along the Danube. This section of the Danube Cycle Path only briefly passes by the industrial facilities, but offers a fascinating contrast between nature, technology, and urban development – typical of the multifaceted city of Linz.
