Sürk cool starting point for Vili Tourene

Stylistically inspired by Italian Baroque architecture with elements reminiscent of French classicism, it took more than four decades to complete this impressive building due to financial constraints during construction.

This very easy pass road from Balsthal to Gänsbrunnen is on very good asphalted surface. The climb is an average of 3-4%, in some places it might at most reach a mild 6%, very suitable for beginners to get an idea of what it is like riding up a pass. At the village of Gänsbrunnen there is the possibility to take the road up to the Binzberg where there is a restaurant bearings the same name. The other to Moutier leading down to the Gänsbrunnen Station is a very nice mild descent of 5% winding through some beautiful small villages. Traffic on this route can vary. Sometimes it is empty but on the weekend traffic picks up more. It is better to ride up in the morning on the weekend.

This great asphalted cycleway winds its way through Balsthal with mountains on each side of the valley.

A very smooth separated asphalted Route which winds through the country side. It is flat until 1 km after Herbertswil where the very mild climb 8 3-4% to Welschenrohr starts.

This climb from Balsthal side leads up to some of very nice climbs, even one of the steepest asphalted climbs in Switezrland. The first climb is direct to Gänsbrunnen and it is a mild 3-5% climb on excellent asphalted surfaces and for the most part with dotted lines to separate them from traffic. It depends on what time of day as traffic can range from zero to medium. There is a chance to stop halfway up at the village of Welschenrohr which has several cafés near the Raiffeisenbank. It also leads to several other climbs, one of Switzerland’s steepest asphalted climbs, Balmberg with up to 25% grade as well as another, just as challenging climb Weissenstein.

Balsthal is a great starting point leading to 4 nice low level passes (Passwang, Schelten, Hauenstein and Binzberg via Gänsbrunnen). The village itself does offer several restaurants from inexpensive bistros to 3 star restaurants as well as several fountains to fill up your water bottles.

Very nice view of the castle ruins and the chapel, where the Mümliswiler Bach has cut its way through the ridge.
