The castle is a walled, two-story, hook-shaped castle complex from the 16th century with a free-standing baroque “Our Lady” chapel. The castle is privately owned. The owners currently use it, among other things, as a gallery for Meissen porcelain and silverware.

The beautiful Cumberland Castle is located on a small hill, adorned with a park, promenade paths inviting for walks, above the natural jewel Krottensee. In 1882, Duke Ernst August (II), Crown Prince of Hanover, acquired a lot of land in the immediate vicinity of the Queen's Villa in the north of the city and had a magnificent palace built in the neo-Gothic Windsor style on the hill between 1882 and 1886. In 1886 the Guelphs moved into the extensive and magnificently furnished palace complex. From 1886 until his death in 1923, the palace was the seat of the exiled crown prince. His mother and some other members of the family are buried in a mausoleum next to the castle.
