The post mill in Dornum in the Aurich district was built in 1626 and is the oldest preserved windmill in East Frisia.

Upstalsboom - Frisian Freedom Frisian Freedom remains a unique feature of East Frisia. In the Middle Ages, from the 11th to the 14th centuries, it was a singular form of society in contrast to the rest of feudal Europe. It represented a league of independent rural communities along the Frisian coast. Their freely elected representatives typically met on the Tuesday after Pentecost, later known as Oll' Mai (Old May), at the Upstalsboom in Rahe near Aurich to ensure justice and freedom for all Frisians.
