The idea of recultivating the disused railway line from Lamspringe to Bad Gandersheim as a hiking and cycling path was born in 1991 by Ernst-August Quensen from Lamspringe. The route runs through a wide, open, harmonious landscape and connects two historical cultural sites, the former monasteries of Lamspringe and Brunshausen. The ideas of the Jewish painter and sculptor Otto Freundlich, who planned sculpture roads to connect peoples (e.g. from Paris to Moscow) as early as the 1930s, but these could not be realized in the war times that followed, can be seen as the spiritual model for the path. In 2001, the sculptor Leo Kornbrust took up the idea of creating a "Road of Sculptures in Europe". As a tribute to Otto Freundlich, he initiated the "Road of Peace" in stages - the Sculpture Trail is part of it. The asphalt is consistently good. The path is not overly wide, but cyclists can still pass easily. From a skater's point of view, we recommend going from south to north and back from north to south. From Bad Gandersheim, it is a noticeable, steady climb. And some of the sculptures are facing south. So you naturally go a little slower and can enjoy the facilities and views. On the way back, you can go much faster and have a great riding experience.
