Pfauenmoos is not far from the road that leads from St. Gallen to Obersteinach. The stately house is hidden in an extensive park to the east of the village of Berg. From 1400 onwards, the area gradually passed into the hands of various large St. Gallen families. In 1525, Dorothea Grüblin sold the area, the vines and all belongings to the Seckelmeister Leonhard Zollikofer (1494-1544), a St. Gallen cashier. From his brother's hands, the estate passed in 1564 to Leonhard's nephew of the same name as his uncle, who was the first owner and founder of the Fideikommiss von Altenklingen. Until his death in 1587, Leonhard Zollikofer retained the Pfauenmoos wine-growing region, which served him as a manor, and the estate of Altenklingen, over which he had jurisdictional rights. After rounding out his property by purchasing neighboring lands, he placed it in fideikommiss in favor of the elder (senior) for each future generation. The provision was only lifted in 1839 and the area was sold in favor of the Altenklingen family property. During the ten years that followed, the area belonged to Jakob Benedikt Germann, then from 1849 to Baron Cornelius von Heyl zu Herrnsheim von Worms, who in turn made a family foundation that included Klein Hahnberg in Berg http://www.swisscastles.ch/StGallen/pfauenmoos_d.html

The old Hahnberg domain lies halfway between St. Gallen and Arbon, in the heart of a blooming area where the vines thrive. From the 16th In the 19th century it attracted the rich citizens of St. Gallen who spent the summer there. In 1421 the abbey gave the Hahngber area as a fief to the Hör, a rich and well-known St. Gallen family. In 1529 all of their goods were sold to Jakob I Zollikofer. Ten years after his death, his son, James II, took possession of the area again. In 1612 he died and Hahnberg was divided between his son and nephew. A house that took the name from “Kleiner Hahnberg” already existed when the Grosser Hahnberg residence was built in 1616. In 1684, “Grosser Hahnberg” came to the Schlumpf family, then knew several owners over the two centuries that followed. As for Kleiner Hahnberg, it gradually became the property of the Schlumpf in 1649, then the Fels, Conductor and Tinsmith, and finally in 1751 found itself in the hands of the High Commissioner of the Abbey Principality Ferdinand Joseph von Bayer. The country residence remained in this large von Rorschach family until 1880. Then the series of ownership changes began again. Kleiner Hahnberg still bears witness to the successive transformations. Previously in the 16th century it was a modest, much smaller winemaker's house, with red half-timbering. It later became a stately structure with gray half-timbering and a snail staircase, which was enclosed in a wall cage. It is assumed that this happened during the Zollikofer era, certainly before 1649. The interior furnishings, with their original Baroque style, also date back to this time. During the second half of the 17th century, the Fels completed the furnishings in a newer style. After them, Ferdinand Joseph von Bayer and his son Franz Anton carried out fundamental internal restructuring, the first from 1751, the second around 1770.
