The market square in Basel is much more than just a square. Since the 12th century, it has been the center of the city's political life. As a square in front of the town hall, it fulfilled political, military and legal functions. In 1501, the Federal Charter of the Confederation was read out and sworn in before the assembled able-bodied citizens. In the event of danger, the men of the military assembled on the square and were equipped with weapons from the town hall. Fire extinguishing material was also stored in the surrounding buildings. The market square was also the site of punishments and public executions of political criminals. The pillory and other institutions for execution were also located here.
