Beautiful castle ruins, which were supposedly built as ruins from the start.

It's not true that this castle can only be visited on Saturdays. The Falkenstein Castle ruins are open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from April 1 to November 2.

The history of Bockfließ Castle goes back to 1168. "Breastwork of the Marchfeld", "place of refuge for the residents", a "real fortress" are descriptions of the castle in medieval documents. In the 15th century, the castle was known as a moated castle, and in the 18th century it was converted into a castle-like fortress. The notches of Turkish sabres can be seen on the old inner gate. The interior rooms were plundered in 1809 and 1945. Today the castle is owned by Countess Maya Goess, née Abensperg-Traun, and serves as a private residence. Admission to the courtyard is free, entry to the observation tower is €2 per person.

The complex, which in its basic form dates back to the 13th century, now houses exhibition areas, a music school, a studio and a restaurant following a partial renovation between 2011 and 2013.

The history of Falkenstein Castle is as old as the settlement of the Weinviertel itself. The castle was built under Emperor Henry III in the middle of the 11th century. As a border fortress to the north, it once protected the country from attacks from Bohemia and Hungary. The first lords of Falkenstein were vassals of the Babenbergs. Falkenstein Castle was a sovereign fief and pledge for centuries until it became private property in 1571. In 1645, the castle was conquered by the Swedes, but not destroyed.
