A very nice view of the Zugspitze

Reachable from the Grubighütte in about 1 hour. Absolute surefootedness and a head for heights are required. The path (black path) is not very easy in the last section and you have to scramble a bit. At the summit itself you have a fantastic view!

At 2962 meters, the Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany and the Wetterstein range. It lies southwest of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and the border between Germany and Austria runs across its western summit. To the south of the mountain is the Zugspitzplatt, a karst plateau with numerous caves. There are three glaciers on the flanks of the Zugspitze, including the two largest in Germany: the Northern Schneeferner with 30.7 hectares and the Höllentalferner with 24.7 hectares; also the Southern Schneeferner with 8.4 hectares. The Zugspitze was climbed for the first time on August 27, 1820 by Josef Naus, his measuring assistant Maier and the mountain guide Johann Georg Tauschl. Today there are three normal routes to the summit: from the north-east from the Höllental, from the south-east from the Reintal and from the west via the Austrian Schneekar. With the Jubilee Ridge, which connects the Zugspitze, Hochblassen and Alpspitze, one of the most well-known ridge routes in the Eastern Alps leads to the Zugspitze. There are numerous accommodations for mountaineers in the immediate vicinity. The Munich House is located directly on the Zugspitze on the west summit and the Wiener-Neustädter-Hütte on the west flank. Three cable cars lead to the summit of the Zugspitze. The first, the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn, was built in 1926 and ended on a ridge below the summit before the terminus was moved to the summit in 1991. A cog railway, the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn, runs through the interior of the north flank and ends on the Zugspitzplatt, from where another cable car runs up to the summit. With the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn and the Eibsee cable car, the third cable car, an average of 500,000 people reach the summit every year. In winter, nine ski lifts serve a ski area on the Zugspitzplatt. In the 1900 inaugurated meteorological station and the research station Schneefernerhaus mainly climate research is carried out
