The impressive 130-meter-long wooden bridge leads visitors directly to the picturesque Ort Castle, which sits on a small island in Lake Traunsee. With its remarkable Renaissance arcaded courtyards, the castle attracts numerous tourists year after year who want to discover the history and beauty of this place. Since 1995, the castle has belonged to the municipality of Gmunden, which maintains it with great dedication and preserves its historical splendor. The castle's history is as fascinating as it is multifaceted; in 1915, it was transferred from the estate of Johann Orth to the state forestry service. Over the centuries, Ort Castle and the Ort estate changed hands several times, resulting in an interesting cultural heritage. This eventful history makes Ort Castle a significant part of the region, captivating visitors both culturally and architecturally.

Worth seeing

On May 9, 2016, the castle was severely damaged by a fire in the roof truss. The renovation will take some time. Seat of power as early as the 13th century. Today's appearance after reconstruction in 1842 by Archduke Maximilian Habsburg d'Este, a grandson of Maria Theresa (burial place in the cemetery). The chateau passed to a Bourbon line by inheritance. In 1971, Prince Carlos Hugues de Bourbon donated the castle to the municipality of Altmünster. Current owner: The state of Upper Austria, which set up a hospitality vocational school here (1986). The castle park with its unique botanical specimens and the rose garden is worth seeing. The mighty castle has two courtyards and is a product of generous conversions and extensions. The front courtyard is surrounded by three wings of the castle, is also surrounded by a wide wall and is one of the treasures of the castle. In its center is a stone, octagonal well with carved coats of arms and a stone central column. The facade of the right wing is not decorative, whereas the left wing is more loosened up by supporting pillars. The two upper floors of the central wing have glazed arcades. In the middle a slender clock tower with a cornice gable. Impressive is the rear facing the lake, which has 75 windows. It also has a portico with architrave and pointed gable, based on the classic Greek model. The park, which extends to the Traunseebundesstraße, is also tailored to the imposing facade of this castle.

The Seeschloss Ort is located on a small island, which is connected to the Tuscany peninsula by a 120 m long wooden bridge. It is Gmunden's landmark. Until a few years ago, the spelling "Orth" was common. On the left side of the inner courtyard, various high water marks are drawn, according to which the flood in 1594 in the Seeschloss Ort had reached a height of 2.97 m and thus the top step of the ambulatory. The small palace chapel is dedicated to Saint James. The castle tower, behind which the much smaller church tower almost disappears, bears the year "1092". The altarpiece depicts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, attended by James the Elder, the patron saint of the church.

Until a few years ago, the spelling "Orth" was common.

Between 1996 and 2004, the castle was the setting for the hit TV series Schlosshotel Orth, which caused some confusion among tourists as the castle walls do not house a hotel, only a restaurant and wine bar.

Schloss Ort – meaning the lake castle – was first mentioned in a document in 909 and later in 1053. The castle was originally a moated castle, but was rebuilt in its present form after the fire in 1626.
