The site has now been cleared by order of the municipality of Rosengarten.

I personally always find the term "Kriegsdenkmal" (war memorial), used (not only here) in the name of the highlight, a bit jarring. Although it is the literal translation of the English "War Memorial" and widely used in that language, in my subjective opinion, the term should not be used that way in German. After all, one commemorates not "the war" itself, but rather "the victims of the war(s)." For many decades, the term "Kriegerdenkmal" (war memorial) was common throughout the country; now, "Gefallenen-Denkmal" (fallen memorial) or "-Ehrenmal" (war memorial) is gaining ground. In my opinion, this term much better clarifies the current (dual) meaning—namely, on the one hand, to commemorate the victims of war and tyranny, and on the other, to understand this as a reminder to maintain peace.

A really great route with good climbs and beautiful forest and country paths.

A small curiosity along the side of the road. Most road cyclists probably come here for the long climb and the long descent between Langenrehm and Sieversen, which are great to ride in both directions. On the descent, it's better to take the road because of the high speeds you can reach, although the bike path here is in really excellent condition.

When descending, it's recommended to ride on the road rather than on the mandatory bike path, as otherwise you'll not only have to contend with the poor condition of the bike path, but also with motor vehicles that don't take a bike approaching from the right seriously (because, from their perspective, they're riding against the direction of traffic). However, the Harburg district still approves of such one-way bike paths. The city of Hamburg has lifted the mandatory use of Ehestorfer Heueweg at the turn of the year 2024/2025.

A nice place in itself, but unfortunately the service is abysmal.

Between Helmstorf and Klecken there is a great undulating section... definitely plan for it :-)
