The remains of an old amusement park

A beautiful approach to the castle. However, the walk along the moat is also worthwhile, as is a tour around the moated castle. The 15th-century castle consists of an outer and a main castle on two islands. Thanks to the different architectural periods, elements of Classicism (Rentei), Neo-Gothic (chapel), and Renaissance (stepped gable) can be found here. Since its purchase in 1786, the castle has been privately owned by the Heereman von Zuydtwyck family from Roermond, and is still inhabited today by Philipp Freiherr Heereman von Zuydtwyck. Conclusion: Even though the castle is privately owned, a visit and tour of the complex is worthwhile. Tours of the public parts of the castle are also available upon reservation.

In spring/summer, none of the ruins are visible due to the dense foliage of the trees.

The Schlossmühle in Burgsteinfurt is a former watermill that is now used as an Italian restaurant. It is located directly opposite Burgsteinfurt Castle on the Steinfurter Aa. The mill was first mentioned in a document in 1348. It originally served as a grain mill and later also as a sawmill. In 1907 the mill was shut down and converted into a residential building. In 1985 the castle mill was acquired and restored by the city of Steinfurt. It has been used as a restaurant since 1990. The castle mill is a listed building. It is a two-story brick building with a mansard roof. The building has numerous decorations, such as shutters and doors in the Renaissance style. The Schlossmühle is a popular tourist attraction in Burgsteinfurt. It is a beautiful example of a historic watermill and provides a unique setting for dinner.

The artificial and then habitable ruins already existed in 1805. The island itself was created in 1788 as the first of the five islands that still exist today. The cascade was quickly extended by a steep mountain of boulders over which the water was supposed to run haphazardly. Problems arose due to a lack of stability, among other things due to two ice cellars built earlier, so that the entire cascade collapsed in 1804. Large parts of the rock cascade could still be found on the island at the beginning of this century, but nothing can be seen of it today.
