Cottonwood Pass is the high point along the road between Buena Vista and Taylor Park Reservoir. This point on the road is well above treeline and is along the Colorado Trail. It's worth visiting even if you don't want to journey far from the car.

Maroon Lake is an alpine lake situated at the center of the Maroon Bells Scenic Area and sits at an elevation of 9,585 feet. The view across Maroon Lake, with North Maroon Peak in the background, is the most photographed scene in Colorado. It can be very crowded in the summer; however, due to the limited access for cars, biking becomes a great option.

This section of Upper Cattle Creek Road takes you past Spring Park Reservoir on relatively smooth, hard-packed gravel. It is doable on a road bike, but you might want slightly fatter tires (~28mm and up) for a more comfortable ride.

Beaver Lake is a large, popular lake in Marble, Colorado. You can swim and fish in the lake (it's cold, though), and you can follow the service road that passes by it and check out more of the natural and historical features along the Crystal City Road.

Aspen, Colorado, the world-famous ski resort town is a great place to kick off or end your ride by exploring the historic downtown area. Cruise through the streets with Victorian architecture, checking out local shops and art galleries, grab a quick coffee at one of the nearby cafes, or stop by one of the diverse restaurants in town for a meal, before hitting the road again.

Travelling from the direction of Aspen south west towards Maroon Bells, this is a spectacular climb. Views of the mountain are incredible and at the top, Maroon Lake makes a perfect rest stop. A visit in the fall makes an incredible ride somehow even better.

This school was built it 1917 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. Surrounded by sagebrush and cattle this property includes schoolhouse, two outhouses, and a coal shed. The schoolhouse is also available for public use and is a venue for wedding, birthdays, mitzvahs, and any other social occasion.

The Rio Grande Trail is a paved bike path which parallels the highway and Roaring Fork River here between Carbondale and Glenwood Springs. There are public restrooms off the trail near the middle of this segment. From the trail you get splendid views of the canyons and rivers.
