The customs tower was a toll station for the Eppstein and Electoral Mainz customs administration and a signal tower and lookout for the customs officers. There was a signal connection with the Großauheim customs tower. The "Steinheimer Zoll" was levied since 1358 as a fee for the use of the royal roads on land and water.
