The Pietzmoor in the Lüneburg Heath was renaturalized in 1985/86. A 4.4 km circular trail offers excellent views of the moor and its water features. Half of the trail is on a wooden boardwalk.

It is amazing what successful renaturation of the moor can achieve in such a short time.

The approximately 7,500-year-old Pietzmoor Sneverdingen is the largest contiguous raised bog in the Lüneburg Heath, covering approximately 2.7 square kilometers. The peat thickness is 4 to 7.5 meters. The 5.5 km long rectangular circular path is provided with contiguous plank walkways on 4.8 km to the south and west. The areas of the former peat cuttings were filled with water for renaturation so that the moor would once again be rich in trees. As a result, dead birch stumps stand in the moor lakes. The typical fauna that have settled in the moor are moor frogs, four-spotted dragonflies, forest lizards, adders, and the typical flora is cotton grass, yellow bog lily, and bell heather.

When it's wet, you have to be very careful on the wooden walkways as they are extremely slippery.

Sylvestersee The picturesque Sylvestersee, named after a British officer, was created by the compaction of the subsoil by heavy military machines. Today it blends harmoniously into the Osterheide and, although it is only fed by rainwater, has never dried out.
