The Black Drin (Alb. Drin/-i i Zi; Macedonian Црни Дрим Crni Drim) rises in Lake Ohrid; according to other sources, the head of the river is in the Ostrovo area near the monastery of Sveti Naum. The small town of Struga in southwest Macedonia lies at the outflow at 695 m. The river flows 149 kilometers north through the mountainous landscape of western Macedonia and northeastern Albania. In North Macedonia, the river passes two reservoirs, Lake Globočica and Lake Debar immediately near Debar. Shortly after the large dam of Lake Debar, it reaches the border with Albania, which it forms for a few kilometers. After that, it crosses entirely into Albanian territory. The further course of the river in Albania continues north through sparsely populated, mountainous and impassable landscapes.
