Lots of volcanic history at Laacher See

A beautiful lake in the Volcanic Eifel. A hike around the lake is definitely worth it! 🙂

The Laacher See area is of volcanic origin🌋. The oval Laacher See 🌊 is the largest lake in Rhineland-Palatinate with around 3.3 km² and a water depth of more than 50 m. The Laacher See and the surrounding lands are owned by the Maria Laach Abbey⛪️. From a scientific point of view, however, the Laacher See is not a maar or a real crater lake, but a water-filled caldera - a crater that was created by a collapse after the magma chamber below the volcanic cone was emptied. Small bubbles rise in the water - these so-called mofettes are rising carbon dioxide and illustrate the volcanic history of the lake🌋.

A beautiful little lake. A pizzeria and a restaurant with good plain cooking are right on the lake. There is also a playground and a gym.

Mofettes are rising bubbles of CO2 that smell like sulfur. Monks used to have a monastery on this site which no longer exists as they may all have died from carbon dioxide poisoning. The Laacher See is located in the caldera of a 13,000 year old dormant volcano that is not yet extinct.
