古いVispは、約150年前まで谷底で絶えず洪水が発生していたため、丘陵地帯に発展しました。ローヌ川とビスパ川は改修、拡張、そして水路化されました。これにより、地域全体が開発可能になりました。人々が丘の上に建設したもう一つの理由は、オーバーヴァリスへの軍事的圧力でした。環状壁のある丘の上では、より良く防御することができました。13世紀と14世紀のいくつかの火災と、1518年の大火災は、Vispのほぼ全体を破壊しました。そのため、1518年より前に建てられた家屋はごくわずかしか見られません。
