The Belchenhaus was built in 1898 as a shelter below the Belchen summit. It is located at 1,360 meters and is therefore the highest inn and restaurant in Baden-Württemberg. Guests sometimes describe the south terrace in front of the house as one of the most beautiful tavern terraces in the Black Forest.

Finds and excavations indicate that as early as Roman times there was a watchtower on the hill at the site of today's castle ruins. The castle probably dates from the early 12th century and was built by the Lords of Staufen. Adalbert von Staufen built the castle house around 1100. Staufen Castle was explicitly mentioned for the first time in a document from 1248; However, the Üsenbergers, referred to in this context as landlords, never sat in the castle.[2] In the 14th century, a lack of money and unsuccessful feuds between the Lords of Staufen and the nearby city of Freiburg meant that Freiburg was able to gain influence over Staufen Castle.[3] SOURCE: Wikipedia

The Belchen is not the highest mountain, but it is one of the most beautiful mountains in the Black Forest, because it offers visitors a fantastic panoramic view of the Rhine Valley, the Vosges and, in good weather, even as far as the Alps. The Belchenhaus is at an altitude of 1360 m. Hiking trails lead here from all directions, or you can also use the Belchenbahn, whose mountain station is right next to it. We recommend taking a break here with a fantastic view to the south and the🇨🇭! You can fortify yourself in the rest. Or on the terrace, or have a picnic on the many benches. In 15 minutes you can also reach the Belchen summit, from where you can enjoy a magnificent 360° view!
