In the heart of the Bavarian Forest, on a wooded ridge near Saldenburg, the castle of the same name rises, a silent monument to medieval architecture and regional history. Affectionately known locally as the "Forest Lantern," the castle resembles a stone lighthouse, watching over the valleys and telling stories from centuries long past. Built from 1368 onward by Knight Heinrich Tuschl on behalf of the Counts of Hals, Saldenburg originally served to secure a trade route to Bohemia and as a border fortress to the Bishopric of Passau. Over the centuries, it changed hands several times – including noble families such as the Ortenburger, Törringer, and Preysing-Moos. In the 17th century, it was remodeled in the Baroque style, later damaged by the Pandurs, and finally taken over by the Free State of Bavaria in 1928. Since 1929, the castle has housed a youth hostel – and one with a special charm. Those who stay here sleep behind thick walls, dine in the Knights' Hall, and can experience the Baroque castle chapel or Gothic lounges on special tours. The combination of historic ambiance and modern use makes Saldenburg a popular destination for school groups, families, and culture enthusiasts. The castle is located in the Dreiburgenland region, a vacation region centered around the castles of Englburg, Fürstenstein, and Saldenburg. Definitely worth a detour. The castle stands on a wooded hill, and you only notice it when you're standing right in front of it. Very well hidden...

Can be done as a detour from the hiking trail at a bend in the Ilz. There are small trails leading up from the river, which can be used as a shortcut or to extend the tour.

The maiden asks for an escort. Will no knight then capture her through the dreaded territory? The Kaltensteiner is named in a word, who was once a strong refuge for the weak. She knocks and begs, and then she hears “No!” In the gloomy hall of Kaltenstein. “All of you wanderers, leave me in peace! Go, maiden, without a guide. My castle is rotten, my arm is weak, my heart broke years ago. My family was famous and great, then decay became its bitter fate. Now the last Lord of Kaltenstein dies, forgotten and alone!”
