The Remagen Bridge (formerly the Ludendorff Bridge) is a must for those interested in history! There is a beautiful museum in the bridge foundation 👍

The construction of the first church, which was dedicated to St. Martin, the patron saint of the Franks, cannot be precisely determined. It was probably built in the 9th century. Around the year 1110, the Benedictines of Michaelsberg Abbey in Siegburg built a provost's office in Remagen on the initiative and with great support of the population of Remagen. In the 13th century, the relics of St. Apollinaris probably came to the mountain. The earliest documented mention of the saint in Remagen comes from the year 1295. The sarcophagus with the main relic in the crypt of the church dates from the 14th century.

Rhine promenade with lots of bars, quite crowded in summer and on weekends, but nice to sit and watch. Unfortunately, there are still some who believe that relegation only applies to others.

When you cross the Trass caves, you go through a historical disaster area, it is about the eruptions of the Laacher See volcano, which erupted around 13,000 years ago.

Ludendorff Bridge - a railway bridge in the city of Remagen (Rhineland-Palatinate), 325 meters long, built during World War I to increase the efficiency of transporting soldiers and war materials to the Western Front. The bridge was designed by Karl Wiener. Its name comes from General Erich Ludendorff. During World War II, on March 7, 1945, it was captured by the American 9th Armored Division. It was the only intact bridge across the Rhine in Allied hands, and two attempts by the defenders to blow it up ended in failure. The capture of the bridge was called the "Miracle of Remagen". The Germans tried to destroy the bridge using planes and V2 rockets, but without success. On March 17, 1945, the Ludendorff Bridge collapsed due to damage - 30 American soldiers lost their lives. These events were shown in the 1969 American film "The Bridge At Remagen" directed by John Guillermin. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWj0EnWyNgk

A piece of history: the double-track railway bridge once connected Remagen and Erpel. The bridge became famous through an incident in the final phase of the Second World War. The first Allies crossed the Rhine through them. It should actually have been blown up in 1945 - like all other Rhine bridges. But since less and different explosives were used, the bridge remained standing, allowing Western Allied troops to cross the Rhine at this point. One suspects the unsuccessful blasting and the fighting ultimately led to the collapse of the bridge in March 1945.

The basalt stick of the Erperler Ley impresses me again and again, even though I've seen it a hundred times.

The American troops' crossing of the Rhine over the Remagen Bridge is an important event in the history of World War II. The still preserved bridge portals on both sides of the river are well worth seeing. A citizens' initiative is striving to build a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge at the old site.
