Ludendorff Bridge - a railway bridge in the city of Remagen (Rhineland-Palatinate), 325 meters long, built during World War I to increase the efficiency of transporting soldiers and war materials to the Western Front. The Germans tried to destroy the bridge using planes and V2 rockets, but without success. On March 17, 1945, the Ludendorff Bridge collapsed due to damage - 30 American soldiers lost their lives. A piece of history: the double-track railway bridge once connected Remagen and Erpel. The bridge became famous through an incident in the final phase of the Second World War. The first Allies crossed the Rhine through them. It should actually have been blown up in 1945 - like all other Rhine bridges.
