ハウス・ランゲンにあるアルテ・ムーレ（古い製粉所）は、ヴェストベーフェンの歴史的建造物群の中で最も特徴的な部分の一つです。この製粉所は、川がエムス川に合流する直前のベーファー川にある堰の上に位置しており、貴族の邸宅と共に、ミュンスターラント地方特有の水辺と邸宅の景観を形成しています。元々は製油所として操業していましたが、後に穀物の製粉に使われるようになり、1960年代まで稼働していました。現在では技術的な施設ではなく、私有の歴史的建造物となっており、その立地と外観が際立っています。特に、水流、堰、古い製粉所の建築、そしてハウス・ランゲンの周辺環境の組み合わせが、この場所を非常に魅力的なものにしています。ミュンスターラント地方はこの景観を、ロマンチックで、画家や写真家にとって人気のモチーフとして明確に描写しています。この製粉所は、ハウス・ランゲンとその貴族の邸宅の長い歴史の一部であり、その邸宅は古くから「フォン・ランゲン騎士団」と結びついていました。そのため、アルテ・ムーレは美しい写真の被写体であるだけでなく、この地域の、中世の経済的・支配構造の目に見える遺産でもあるのです。

ハウス・ランゲンはエムス川近くにあるかつての騎士の館です。環状の城壁は1000年より前に築かれ、周囲を堀で囲まれた最も古い要塞の一つに数えられます。現在、門楼のみが残っています。すぐ向かいには二連の風車があります。

Great coffee and tea specialties with a small roastery

In 1908, the building contractor Heinrich Hardensett from Telgte bought the newly built mill yard, the large mill and the “new small mill” at the Emstor.

Haus Langen is a former manor. The oldest document about the manor dates back to 1150. In 1276, the manor was completely destroyed by the Bishop of Münster and not rebuilt. The manor was originally surrounded by a large ring wall with three moats, one of which still runs completely around the island of the former castle and the others are still there in fragments. During the Thirty Years' War, farmers from the surrounding area sought shelter in this ring wall. The building that still exists today is probably a building from the outer bailey of a manor house that was located here, but it was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century. The oldest parts of the preserved building date from the 17th century. The former manor also included a water mill that is powered by the water of the Bever. The mill was first mentioned in 1276 and was initially used as an oil mill, later only grain was ground. The mill was in operation until 1960. Haus Langen and the still very well preserved water mill are a popular destination for hikers and cyclists and are very idyllically located.

A visit to Telgte is worthwhile. There are nice restaurants and cafes on Kardinal-von-Galen-Platz. 🍰🍺

As in probably every other profession, there are so-called “black sheep” among the honorable millers in the milling trade. The popular children's book author Otfried Preußler tells the following short episode in “The Flight into Egypt”: “And they didn't even get all the way to Klostergrätz that evening, but there was a mill on their way, the monastery mill - they stayed there until the next morning. At first the monastery miller was almost shocked when the k.k. Gendarmerie knocks on his door: There had been a certain dispute with a customer last week about a few sacks of milling material, which had disappeared in a completely inexplicable way in the mill here […] but it could have been that he had been reported for it anyway – and now they’re coming to pick him up… then of course all the disputed milling sacks had immediately fallen from his mind, the monastery miller, just as [sergeant] Hawlitschek is now simply asking him for a place to stay for the night.”
