The river rises in the Lusatian Uplands (Upper Lusatia) at an elevation of 317 m above sea level on the eastern flank of the 396-meter-high Kuppe, a subsidiary peak of the Hochstein. The source is located approximately 1.5 kilometers south of the village of Kindisch, part of Elstra. From there, the Black Elster initially flows north through Elstra, Kamenz, Milstrich, and Wittichenau. From Hoyerswerda, it flows westward to Elsterheide. Annaburg is worth a visit. Like everything in the area, it's a relatively isolated area, but it's interesting to see what has already been refurbished and what hasn't. A slightly larger town in the area with supermarkets and other retail outlets.
