Honister Pass links the Buttermere Valley to the eastern end of Borrowdale. At 356 metres (1,167 feet), it’s one of the highest passes in Cumbria, featuring a steep 1-in-4 (25%) gradient.

An image above shows the lighting system switched on, however for one reason or another, it was off as I passed through on an overcast day. Another rider oncoming without lights (like me) was barely visible in the middle of the tunnel. Mercifully, we'd already spotted one another entering. If you have an urge to read your phone/navigation device on a similarly gloomy day while the tunnel lighting system is switched off, my advice would be to do so before you enter the tunnel. You're going to need 100% attention if there's traffic ahead!

In 2020, the Bobbin Mill Tunnel opened as part of an upgrade project to the Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Path. It was originally one of the two tunnels on the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith railway line and was dug through a spur on the banks of the River Greta. As part of the refurbishment project, picnic benches and viewing stations were installed close by.

Nice shortcut via bridge Portinscale to Keswick. Also there is a good and free car parking on Keswick end od the foot bridge. Dead end road.

At the layby there's a fabulous view of Bassenthwaite Lake, the fourth-largest among the lakes in the Lake District. The River Derwent serves as both its primary inflow and outflow, ultimately emptying into the Irish Sea at Workington.

Stop. Take it all in. These bridges all gave areas to stop and have a break/rest if you wanted to.

A lovely village cafe, Open 10am to 5pm during the summer and 9:30am to 4pm from 11th September, closing only for Christmas, Boxing and New Year’s Days. Walkers, cyclists and dogs welcome.

A wonderful family cycling route, perfect for balance bikes and small cyclsists. Avoid between 9 and 10am on a Saturday morning as this trail is used for Park Run.

A brilliant tunnel to woop and hoot through!

After the original bridge was damaged beyond repair during Storm Desmond in 2015, the new bridge won the Bridge Design and Engineering Awards in 2021.

Lookout for dogs & extending leads!

The main road from Keswick to Cockermouth used to take you through the village of Portinscale via a two arched stone bridge known as the Long Bridge. There were plans to replace it in 1911 but these plans were opposed and it was not until it was damaged by floods in 1954 that it was replaced initially by a temporary metal structure. When the road was built to bypass the village in the 1960's a new road bridge was built further downstream and the current suspension bridge was built for pedestrians only allowing people to access Portinscale across the fields known as the Howrahs.

Crossing over the Ouse Bridge, the water rushes from the Derwent River to the west into Bassenthwaite to the east. The location of Bassenthwaite in the quieter northern end of the national park can make this a more tranquil lake to visit.

Pleasant traffic-free route in & out of Keswick.

Plenty of opportunities to take in the scenery along the river valley from the Threlkeld-Keswick rail trail, which crosses the river several times.
