A good find, tucked away on a quiet corner down a little lane. The brightly-painted wooden furniture contributes to an eclectic look.

The Green Parrot cafe in the square has good coffee and lovely cakes. Nice to sit outside on a sunny dau

This is the gatehouse for an old Priory not far from Castle Rising, now part of private drive with no through traffic for bikes.

Lovely views onto the halls, the surface here is good in the summer to early autumn

One of the most impressive set of priory ruins in the east of England. Only visit if you're not wearing road cleats though.

Castle Acre Priory is one of the largest and best-preserved monastic sites in England, dating back to 1090. It was the home of the first Cluniac order of monks in England and the Cluniac love of decoration is everywhere reflected in the extensive ruins. There is much to see at the priory, including the beautiful west end church gable, prior’s lodging and substantial remains of many of the buildings round the cloister. Herbs are grown in the recreated herb garden, which the monks would have used for medicinal, culinary and decorative purposes. Such an amazing place and very atmospheric around sunset, it does cost to get in and closes early but is worth, you can walk around the outskirts for free and this is best down at sunset or sunrise, a truly beautiful spot full of history. https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/castle-acre-castle-acre-priory/

The amazing Castle Acre, mainly prodigious lumps and bumps now but you can get a real feel for the sheer scale of the place how it must projected power and authority for Normans to their sometimes rebellious Saxon subjects.

The fantastic bailey gate here reminds me of a similar specimen I saw in Belgium at Veurne. Not far from here is the Red Lion Hostel which is run by a 90 year old lady called Alison, wonderful place to stay if you get the chance.

Lovely crossing to the south of Castle Acre if you come in following the Peddars way, there is a view out to the old Monastery.

Excellent cafe serving high quality deli food. Courtyard seating as well as tables out front, or indoors if wet. Open 8am-6pm Mon-Sat, 9am-12pm Sun.

Fairly unexceptional parish church, noteworthy for the fact that the south wall re-uses Roman masonry blocks from the fort of Branodunum just to the east of the village.

If heading west, it's at the foot of a fast drop-down taking you into two right-angled corners, first a left then a right. Now a National Trust holiday let.

The scenic birthplace of England's greatest naval hero. The wide green and double street is surrounded by chi-chi shops for the North Norfolk Coast tourist trade. There's a bakery for coffee, savouries and buns, as well as a tea room and cafe if you want to sit in.

Excellent cafe/tearoom, for eat in or takeaway on the benches outside the front or opposite on the green. Open 10am-3.30pm every day in spring/summer (kitchen closes 2.30pm), less in winter.
