Derwent Dam, is a stunning neo-Gothic construction that far transcends function alone. Built between 1902 and 1916, it is 340 m in length and 35 m high. The dam is famously linked to WWII history; RAF’s 617 Squadron, the “Dambusters”, trained here using “bouncing bombs”.

Derwent Reservoir is the middle of three linear reservoirs running north to south in the Peak District that supplies nearly all of the water for Derbyshire. Derwent Dam itself is a stone built dam that was built between 1902 and 1916. The dam and its twin stone towers are noted for being the aiming points for the RAF’s iconic 617 ‘Dambuster’ squadron when they practiced their low level flights during WW2 before they set off to bomb the German dams in the Ruhr Valley using Barnes Wallace revolutionary bouncing bombs. It is a beautiful area, and the dam is a very impressive feature that is 114 feet (35 m) high and 1,110 feet (340 m) in length. The base of the dam is a whopping 178 feet (54 m) thick.
