Emmasee in Bremen's Bürgerpark is an easily accessible destination if you're simply looking for a bit of peace and quiet. Passing clouds are reflected in the lake, and a light breeze rustles the leaves. The lake is named after Countess Emma von Lesum. Right on the shore is the café "emma am see," built in 1964 according to designs by architects Hans Budde and Carsten Schröck. Opposite the café is a rowboat rental if you'd prefer to explore the lake from the water.

The Stadtwaldsee in Bremen, created in the 1970s as the city's largest sand extraction lake, covers an area of around 29 hectares and reaches a depth of 15 metres. Thanks to its clean groundwater, it is a popular bathing destination, especially in summer, and there are two sandy beaches in the south and east, both with a large bathing beach and a nudist area.

Today, the third coffeehouse stands on Lake Emma. The first was demolished in 1897, the second destroyed in 1943. Construction of the new coffeehouse began in May 1963, and the topping-out ceremony was held in October 1963. For the opening on April 30, 1964, the proprietor advertised: "The modern café, right on the lake." Others see a resemblance to a tour boat docked at Lake Emma. It is also called the "House on the Water" or the "Coffeehouse Floating in the Water," because, due to the poor subsoil, it is considered a "structural marvel." Inside, it offers seating for 100 guests, and outside, there are approximately 150 garden seats. During the construction period, Lake Emma was also dredged. The first rowboats arrived in 1966. In 1969, the extension on the first floor of the service wing, with 40 to 50 seats, was completed. Source: https://wkgeschichte.weser-kurier.de/wer-holz-verbrauchte-bediente-sich-am-kaffeehaus/

With a size of around 29 hectares and a depth of 15 meters, the Unisee is the largest sand extraction lake in Bremen, which was created in the 1970s as part of highway construction projects. The good water quality of the groundwater-fed, slightly salty lake invites you to swim on hot summer days.

On the north-eastern shore is the so-called university wilderness, a nature reserve, a nudist beach and, a little further west, the "HanseCamping Bremen" campsite. In the south-east, on the side facing the university, there are lawns with a sandy beach. Concerts and open-air events also occasionally take place there. The western end is currently used by surfers, anglers and divers. In 2005 and 2007, a planned waterski facility caused a dispute between a citizens' initiative and a majority in the advisory board on the one hand and the Senator for the Interior and Sport or the potential operator on the other. Investors have repeatedly planned to build hotels or wellness facilities in the north-eastern part of the lake against the will of the population. Since algae often form in summer, the lake must occasionally be closed to swimming. The lake and the nature reserve were created by sand being extracted during the expansion of the A 27 motorway and the construction of the university.
