Ditzum : Ferry and view from the bridge

Ditzum is a fishing village with a small harbor. From here, you can take a ferry to the other side of the Ems.

Borderland between freshwater and salt The sea dike ends at Nieuwe Statenzijl in eastern Groningen. On the border between the Netherlands and Germany, the tidal river Eems flows into the Wadden Sea. In this part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, freshwater and saltwater meet, creating a unique landscape with plants, birds, fish, and other animals that live nowhere else in the Wadden Sea. From the birdwatching hut, you can see how water and land merge and how the salt marsh is regularly flooded. Hundreds of dunlins gather on the Dollard Wadden Sea. The port of Ditzum is special because it still contains many original elements that cannot be found anywhere else, such as the Bültjer shipyard, built in 1929, a special shipyard for wooden ships, which has been expanded and modernized several times since then. The ferry connection to Petkum has existed since the Middle Ages. The current vehicle was built in 1926 as a steam ferry and fitted with a diesel engine in 1953.
