The Stadtwaldsee in Bremen, created in the 1970s as the city's largest sand extraction lake, covers an area of around 29 hectares and reaches a depth of 15 metres. Thanks to its clean groundwater, it is a popular bathing destination, especially in summer, and there are two sandy beaches in the south and east, both with a large bathing beach and a nudist area.

In the south-east, on the side facing the university, there are lawns with a sandy beach. Concerts and open-air events also occasionally take place there. In 2005 and 2007, a planned waterski facility caused a dispute between a citizens' initiative and a majority in the advisory board on the one hand and the Senator for the Interior and Sport or the potential operator on the other. Investors have repeatedly planned to build hotels or wellness facilities in the north-eastern part of the lake against the will of the population. Since algae often form in summer, the lake must occasionally be closed to swimming.
