The water meanders past forests, meadows, and small marshlands, making it an important habitat for birds, insects, and amphibians. During a walk along the stream, you'll experience the tranquility and watch the clear water meander through the natural surroundings. Especially in spring and summer, this is a beautiful spot to spot dragonflies and enjoy the lush green surroundings.

The Elmpter Schwalmbruch observation tower in the municipality of Niederkrüchten, built in 1994, was renovated at the turn of the year 2022/2023. The old observation platform, which had to be demolished in August 2021, was a wooden structure exposed to the elements without protection and had exceeded its normal service life. The tower was very popular and had been established in the region for years. From the platform, you have a sweeping view over the heath and moorland all the way to the Schwalm River. It is also a beautiful starting point for hiking through the nature reserve with its restored oxbows of the Schwalm River and protected species waters.
