The Turkish Gate stands at the former entrance to the Catholic domain that once stood here. All the old buildings behind it belonged to it!

The Türkentor in the Lower Saxon district town of Helmstedt in Germany was built in 1716 to commemorate the victory over the Turks in the same year. It served as the entrance to the domain courtyard from what is now Federal Highway 1 and was in line with the dovecote. It was badly damaged by an air raid in World War II and rebuilt at its current location in 1986. It shows the imperial coat of arms in the gable and above the side passages the coats of arms of the abbot and prior of the monastery, during whose term of office the gate was built. The gate was the main portal to the former St. Ludgeri monastery. (…) By erecting the Türkentor as a triumphal arch, the abbot and prior expressed both their joy at victory and their solidarity with the emperor, to whom the monastery was subordinate in worldly affairs. After the opening of the disc golf park in Piepenbrink on May 27, 2012, interest in this beautiful outdoor sport was awakened among the people of Helmstedt. A small group of enthusiastic players got together and after a few months it was clear that there could be more. The proximity to the Helmstedt Tennis Club and the shared clubhouse led to the establishment of the Helmstedt Eagles as a department of the tennis club. The group has now grown to over 50 members.
