5月 23, 2025, Ockholm Church and War Memorial
The beautiful 17th-century church was built on a mound after the great flood of 1634. Two previous buildings, whose locations are no longer known, had fallen victim to the storm surges of 1362 and 1634 and were swept away. During the second great flood, the entire pastor's family, along with 300-400 other Ockholm residents, drowned; only the eldest son, who was already a student and had left home, survived. Between 1639 and 1641, Ockholm was re-dyked with the active support of the Danish King Christian IV. A new church was built. The king provided the building materials: he donated the stones from the Bordelum "castle," the manor "Fruu Mettenhof" of Meta von Ahlefeld in Bordelum-Uphusum, which had been destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. 8月 23, 2024, Hauke-Haien-Koog Dike Cycle Path
The loop around the Beltringharder Koog and over Nordstrand is also beautiful. Then perhaps over the car dam to Schobüll. Schobüll and Halebüll are located on a tongue of the Geest and therefore have no dyke. To the northwest of Schobüll there is a reed biotope, which is particularly scenic due to the fresh water that flows out. The old dyke of the Hattstedtermarsch from Lüttmoorsiel via Arlauschleuse and to Wobbenbüll has been patched up frequently due to many breaks. This makes it very winding, and inland there are often dikes, bodies of water that were created by the excavation for the repairs. The Arlau, which drains the area as far as the Geest, is also very impressive. The water can only flow to the side because of the clay bed below the ground, which makes the sea level important, and must not be allowed to rise too high.

7月 22, 2024, Salt Marshes at Beltringharder Koog
The salt marshes in the Beltringharder Koog are an important nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein. The Koog, embanked in 1987, covers an area of around 3,350 hectares and is the largest nature reserve on the Schleswig-Holstein mainland. Originally part of the Wadden Sea, the Koog was embanked to reclaim land and provide coastal protection. The entire area has been a nature reserve since 1991, with a particular focus on preserving and promoting the native flora and fauna. The salt marshes in the Beltringharder Koog offer a unique habitat for numerous species of birds and other animals. These zones are particularly important for breeding birds such as bitterns, rails and reed warblers. Rare species such as whinchats, bluethroats and bearded tits also find ideal conditions here. The salt marshes are formed by sediment deposits that are washed into the mudflats by the tides. Over time, plants such as glasswort and sea lavender grow, which characterize the salt marshes. For visitors, the Beltringharder Koog offers numerous hiking and cycling trails that lead through the varied landscape. There are observation huts along the Lüttmoor dam from which you can observe the wildlife. The Koog is also a popular destination for bird watchers, especially during the migration periods in spring and autumn. The Beltringharder Koog is therefore not only an important place for nature conservation, but also an attractive destination for nature lovers and those seeking relaxation who want to experience the diverse landscape and rich wildlife of the Wadden Sea.

The Beltringharder Koog is an impressive nature reserve in North Friesland, Schleswig-Holstein. The Koog was embanked in 1987 and covers an area of 3,350 hectares, making it the largest nature reserve on the Schleswig-Holstein mainland. It was created in response to storm surges and today serves to protect the coast and promote biodiversity in the region. The Beltringharder Koog has a variety of habitats, including saltwater and freshwater lagoons, wet grassland and tidal floodplains. These diverse biotopes provide habitat for numerous species of birds that breed or rest here. Over 100,000 waders and water birds use the Koog throughout the year, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Commonly seen species include greylag geese and black-necked grebes. For visitors, there are well-developed hiking and cycling trails that lead through the diverse landscape of the Koog. Tours that start at Lüttmoorsiel and lead along the dike to Lüttmoorsee and further are particularly recommended. Observation huts and viewing platforms on these routes offer excellent opportunities to observe wildlife in its natural environment. The Koog is also an example of successful cooperation between nature conservation organizations such as NABU, the Wadden Sea Conservation Station and the WWF. Together they ensure that this unique ecosystem is protected and cared for.

7月 22, 2024, Hauke-Haien-Koog Dike Cycle Path
The Hauke-Haien-Koog is an impressive bird sanctuary and a popular destination for cyclists and nature lovers in North Friesland. The Koog was dammed between 1958 and 1960 and is named after the main character in Theodor Storm's novella "The Rider on the White Horse". With an area of 1,250 hectares, of which around 700 hectares are for agricultural purposes and 538 hectares are freshwater reservoirs, the Koog is not only used for agriculture, but above all for bird and nature conservation. The cycle path along the dyke of the Hauke-Haien-Koog offers breathtaking views of the surrounding salt marshes and the diverse bird life. Especially during the migration periods in spring and autumn, the area is an important resting and moulting place for thousands of birds, including geese, ducks, avocets and terns. Rare species such as the bittern and the reed warbler can also be observed here. The cycle path is ideal for bird watching and offers numerous information boards and observation huts along the route. These are accessible all year round and offer insights into the flora and fauna of the protected area. In addition, the Jordsand Association, which looks after the area, offers regular guided tours and events.

It is simply fantastic to drive this route, a well-developed "bicycle highway" on which the many sheep do not cause any disturbance, but rather jump obediently to the side when approached.

Beltringharder Koog is the name of the embankment of part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea in the area of Nordstrand Bay, which was completed in 1987. This measure effectively connected the former island of Nordstrand to the mainland and thus made it part of a peninsula. Wikipedia

6月 4, 2024, St. Laurentius Church Fahretoft
The first news of the existence of a church in Fahretoft dates back to the 14th century, the first official evidence was in 1462. At that time, Fahretoft was still an undyed hallig. The first clergyman known by name was in 1586. The original church in Fahretoft was destroyed by fire in 1635 and the new building in 1668 was also damaged by fire. The church as we see it today was built in 1703, with the benevolent support of the Dukes of Gottorf. The guardian - the Bishop of Lübeck - had the building completed. A stone plaque in the church commemorates this. The church is surrounded by the Fahretoft cemetery. The church received the entrance porch in 1855 and the church was painted white inside. The former bell tower was covered with wood paneling. A colorful "Good Shepherd" window was donated in 1909 by the Hansen family from Chicago. The window "The Prodigal Son" was also donated by emigrants in 1950. The bell dates from 1926, as the previous bells had broken. The bell tower was renewed in 1983. According to legend, the patron saint was tortured to death on a red-hot grate. The modern lectern symbolizes this act. The altar candlesticks bear the year 1675, the chalice is dated 1600. The collection bags date from 1704. www.kirche-dagebuell.de/fahretoft

It is only a few kilometers from Dagebüll harbor and you reach a district of Dagebüll: Fahretoft. A lovely place with lots of little thatched-roof houses on mounds. Lots of nature awaits you and if you drive a little further you will reach the Bottschloter Lake. This little spot on earth is wonderfully recommended for hikes and bike tours. https://www.dagebuell-tourismus.de/vor-ort-umgebung/orte/fahretoft

The Hauke-Haie-Koog is an important resting and moulting area for many species of birds in the Wadden Sea. Every year in spring and autumn, during migration, thousands of geese come to the Hauke-Haie-Koog to rest and moult. Large flocks of dunlins also use this area as a high-water resting place. Avocets, terns, and various songbird species such as reed buntings, bearded tits and sedge warblers use the Koog with its wide reed areas as a breeding area. Marsh harriers, greylag geese, bitterns and various species of ducks also settle here to raise their young. Source: jordsand.de
