2月 28, 2025, Kleine Gete
Beautiful but fairly short path along the Gete on the way to or from Zoutleeuw and in particular from the water gate "3 sluizen" which is nearby.

There are now several benches here, on both sides of the highway, so you certainly have plenty of choice.

2月 28, 2025, Landschapsperron Pijpaardeveld
Four landscape platforms have been placed along the IJzerenweg, the former train connection between Tienen and Diest. You can find one of them here. You can find the Pijpaardeveld landscape platform on a footpath next to the cycle path. It is also higher than the cycle path and both the beginning and the end are indicated by a wooden pole with three symbols: one for bicycle parking, one for a lookout point and one with a bench and tree. The landscape platform itself is also a path in the grass with various seating options. In some of them, a lizard can be seen in lines.

Zoutleeuw was an important trading centre in the Middle Ages. As early as the twelfth century, merchants from Leeuw travelled not only to their own region, but also to Germany, Northern France and England. This increased the city's appeal and also brought about intense trade. The need for a central meeting place and exhibition space was felt. The city council urged the Dukes of Brabant to obtain permission to build a hall. During his visit to Zoutleeuw - on 1 January 1316 - the city obtained permission from Duke Jan III of Brabant. The new building replaced an older hall that had become too small. The new hall was built against the wall of the first rampart, which still forms the rear facade. Zoutleeuw had already built a second ring rampart by then. The building consists of (raised) cellars, spaces for the stalls of cloth merchants, butchers, bakers, ... The grain supplies of the "Table of the Holy Spirit" or Armenkamers were stored in the attic: the poor relief in Leeuw dates from 1235 and is probably the oldest in the country. It is a late Gothic building with a horizontal construction direction and one upper floor. Brick walls with white stone on a quartzite base. The horizontal character of the building is emphasized by a stone band between the two levels and under the windows. In addition to trade, the hall was also used by the shooting guilds, which in the Middle Ages still had a purely military function.

3月 7, 2024, Sint-Leonardus Church and Belfry Tower
The Sint-Leonardus Church in Zoutleeuw is a gem in many respects. High at the top of my wish list is an extensive visit to the inside because this beautiful Gothic church has been left virtually untouched over the years, making it an art museum with a number of unique pieces from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. But the outside is also impressive. Work on the Gothic church probably started around the middle of the thirteenth century. Also special is one of the towers, the St. Barbara's Tower or the belfry of the church, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List with other belfries from Belgium. The church also has the oldest serially cast carillon bells in the world. Art lovers can read the article in a contribution from Public Art Property Flanders, which is not easy to access and which focuses on the many masterpieces: https://www.okv.be/artikelen/de-sint-leonarduskerk-zoutleeuw-een -unique masterpiece story - this is really what they call a highlight.

The elongated building next to the town hall (to the right of the lion on the steps of the town hall in one of the photos) is the former cloth hall. Built after Duke John III had given permission, after his visit to the city around 1316. Used alternately as a bread house (1359), alderman's house (1361), cloth and meat hall (1368 and 1374 respectively) and finally as a guild chamber. 3月 7, 2024, Zoutleeuw Town Hall
The town hall is not the entire historic building you see here, just the part with the stairs. The building next to it is the former cloth hall. The first town hall of Zoutleeuw dates from 1359 and was located elsewhere. This town hall was built from 1530 and was finished in 1538. On the site of the current Saint Leonard's Church, there was a chapel – the date of construction of which is unknown – in honor of Saint Leonard of Noblac. After this chapel was elevated to a parish church in 1231, it was replaced by the current church, which has a long building history: the monumental Gothic building was largely erected between the 13th and 16th centuries.

The cloth hall was built after Zoutleeuw developed into an important trading center in the Middle Ages, due to its location on the connecting road between Cologne and Bruges.
