Skien is one of Norway's oldest cities, dating back to the Middle Ages. It's famously the birthplace of renowned playwright Henrik Ibsen, and you can explore his childhood home, now a museum. Skien is also known as the starting point of the scenic Telemark Canal, a historic waterway with a spectacular system of locks. Historically a center for seafaring and timber exports, it now boasts a blend of urban life with pedestrian streets, green spaces, and a vibrant cultural scene.

A famous landmark in the area, this was the first 'garrison church' in Norway, which housed members of the navy working in the nearby shipyard.

Very nice trip through the archipelago, with narrow passages, past small islands. Bring provisions - no sales, and no charging power for your cell phone.

June 2023: a lot of traffic, better to avoid, plus probably construction site traffic (it was Sunday for me). Uphill very steep (even though I came up with luggage). I didn't see any cycle route signs here

The church was built as a garrison church for Fredriksvern and consecrated in 1756. The church is the country's first garrison church (garrison = all military troops in a city or fortress). The reason for this was that in 1750 Stavern became a naval shipyard for the Danish-Norwegian Navy under the name Fredriksværn Værft, after King Fredrik 5.
