The northern terminus of Vermont's Long Trail is located at the U.S.–Canada border near North Troy, Vermont. This endpoint is marked by a wooden sign and the Journey's End monument, an obelisk-style boundary marker situated at Line Post 592, which has been a symbol of completion for hikers since the 1930s.

Belvidere Mountain lies along the Long Trail, a famous thru-hike, but is accessible via a number of other trails including the Frank Post and Forester’s Trails. Belvidere Mountain stands at 3,352 feet and is fairly prominent along the northern Vermont skyline. At the summit, there is a fire tower maintained by the Green Mountain Club that you can climb to the top of. From the top of the tower, you get truly stunning, 360 degrees views of the entire surrounding area; you can see the Green Mountains to the south, Owls Head and other surrounding mountains in Quebec, Canada to the north, and on clear days, the White Mountains of New Hampshire are visible to the east. You can also see two inactive asbestos mines at the eastern base of the mountain and on the south slope, respectively.

A great challenge with long steep segments. I definitely recommend an adequate gear setup (32 teeth cassette) for climbing, especially if bike touring. Totally worth it though!

This gravel and asphalt segment winds through the hills, offering magnificent views of fields, mountains and Lake Memphremagog. Classic Vermont scenery! There are some good climbs, but they're generally short and the gravel road is well maintained, but can be a bit slick if it's just been resurfaced. I recommend tires at least 32mm wide.

The Vermont Route 5a runs along the western shore of Lake Willoughby. It is likened to a Norwegian fjord with its high sided mountains that rise directly out of the water and is a favorite beauty spot for many locals. You can swim in the chilly, clear water at either end at either North or South Beach.

You don't have to venture far from the road to appreciate the water cascading down the Peter Gilman Waterfall. The river tumbles out of the woods and passes underneath the road before gushing out into Lake Willoughby.
