In 1866, F.H. Kuipers, a native of Akkrum, emigrated to the United States, where he became a wealthy businessman. During his annual visits to his father, he noticed the poverty of the village's elderly population. Therefore, he established a foundation with the goal of providing shelter and food to the village's poor. Coopersburg was built. (Kuiper had changed his name to Cooper in the United States.) It features a magnificent garden, a carp pond, a mausoleum, and a Regent's Room. This room can be visited upon request.

Since 2017, the Terhernster Veer Foundation has operated the ferry service between Eetcafé Portunus (Terherne) and Eetcafé 't Slûske/Jachthaven Sneekerhof (Tersoalstersyl). The trip across the Princess Margriet Canal takes about 10 minutes and also connects cycling junctions 42 and 43.

Terherne, known as the "Kameleondorp" (Chameleon Village), is an island in the Sneekermeer lake. On one side, you'll find the lake, and on the other, the Terhernster pools.

Akkrum is a pleasant water sports village in the middle of the Frisian lake district, near the Alde Feanen National Park.

There's a recent sign saying they want fast cyclists on the bypass. Don't let this deter you; cycle through this beautiful village. If you really want to cycle 35+, you probably don't care about the surroundings anyway, and I would definitely recommend taking the bypass.

I found the view from "Eetcafé Portunus" more beautiful because you can see the entire lake. Huge barges sometimes cross the lake on their way to or from the IJsselmeer. If you miss the ferry, it will arrive again about 25 minutes later. Price June 2025: €1.50 per person, including bike.
