Tucked into the heart of the Nantahala National Forest, Franklin, North Carolina is a small mountain town with a rich history and a big connection to the outdoors. Known as the "Gem Capital of the World," it has long attracted rockhounds and adventurers looking to explore its scenic trails, rushing rivers, and nearby peaks. With its location along the Appalachian and Bartram Trails, Franklin is a popular stop for long-distance hikers and nature lovers alike. The downtown area blends small-town charm with a growing arts scene, local eateries, and outdoor outfitters, making it a perfect base for exploring the beauty of western North Carolina.

A summit of 5342 ft above the forest, offering views of the Great Smoky Mountains and some hills in Georgia at the horizon line. At the top you can find an old stone fire lookout, built in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. There was a fire in 2018 that burned some trees around the area and the roof of the tower, that waslater rebuilt.

This waterfall is located in a lush and green valley, surrounded by rhododendron trees. The trail leading there follows Hemp Patch Branch Creek, with a series of shallow waterfalls along the way.

Albert Mountain has its summit at 5200 ft, with a historic firetower on top that offers outstanding 360-degrees views of the surrounds. From there you have sweeping views of the Blue Ridge range and Little Tenesse valley. The Appalachian Trail goes along its summit, but it is also possible to take other trails to get there. The area is susceptible to thunderstorms, so be sure to check the weather before going.

Siler Bald is a grassy mountain summit that delivers expansive views of Nantahala. From there you can see Wayah Bald Fire Tower, Wine Spring Bald and Albert Mountain. The open field on top of the mountains with the views of the trees is a real treat.

The Wesser Bald Outlook Tower rises from the Wesser Bald Mountain, standing above the trees, giving a 360-degrees overview of the surroundings. It is a perfect spot to have a picnic while enjoying outstanding views of the forest, and is also a great place to catch a sunset or sunrise.

This trail leads you along Glen Falls, which is known for being a triple waterfall. The upper and middle falls offer the most stunning views, but it's worth it to see all three.

Nice Waterfalls next to the Highway 64. Definitely worth the stop. There are only paid parking places ($3).
