Shenandoah National Park is an enchanting gateway to the natural wonders and tranquility that await you there.

Beautiful scenic route. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to explore the trails and only made a quick visit.

Signal Knob Overlook is the most visited and most notable viewpoint in this part of George Washington National Forest. There are also some cell towers just south of the overlook that have a great view. This overlook is at the end of a rock spur trail; it might be best to walk the bike through this section.

North Mountain Trail follows the ridgeline of North Mountain for just over 21 miles, though it’s not necessary to hike the full length. There are many options to do the trail in sections, for example to get to Elliot Knob and Hogback Mountain. The trail passes by some of the most popular summits in Virginia, such as McAfee Knob (iconic photo location), Dragon’s Tooth, and Tinker Cliffs; to reach these peaks it is recommend to plan an overnight trip. This is a trail that was once used by Appalachian Trail hikers as an option to avoid crossing some private property sections at the AT; this was before the National Park Service purchased the land for the present route. Little Schloss is a summit with spetacular views of the Great North Mountain area. This peak is not so popular as its neighboor Big Schloss, but it is a great hike that passes by several view points, going through different terrains like loose gravelly rock, sandy rocks, pine needles and larger leaf covered rocks. Just before reaching the peak, there is a large boulder to practice some rock scrambling, which is not so difficult, but some experience can help. The trail to there can be overgrown in parts, wearing long pants can help avoid some scrapes.

Signal Knob sits in the Shenandoah Mountains, with spectacular views of Strausburg, Fort Hunt Valley and Buzzard Rocks. The Knob is surrounded by trees, it can be a good place to go in fall to see the warm colors exploding in the forest. The trail to there can be rocky and steep, make sure to wear good hiking shoes.

A short hike via Buzzard Rock Trail takes you to this vertical rock formation, with panoramic views of Fort Valley and the National Forest. The second part of the trail is rock so it’s recommended to go with shoes with good traction and support. The parking lot can be busy on weekends, it’s better to get there early.

At 2,530 feet, Kennedy Peak rewards you with stunning panoramic views all year round. However, the winter panorama is particularly breathtaking, due to the snow blanketing the areas below the summit.
