This is a great historic spot along the canal. The lock is still fully operational and you can walk right up to it and the Mohawk River. If you're lucky you will catch a sight of the lock in motion! Sometimes camping is allowed on lock grounds for through-hikers and bikepackers. When in doubt you can always contact the lock master to be sure.

One of several locks on the Erie Canalway Trail. It is a great place for a break, as there is water and picnic benches. It is also a popular camping spot for touring cyclist riding the Erie Canalway Trail.

Nice view of Amsterdam Castle from the Empire State Trail. The castle was built in 1895 as an armory for the National Guard. It was decommissioned in 1994 and is now a hotel. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 and has the distinction of being the only armory in the US turned into a private residence.
