The city of Rockford is a historic town in Illinois. First settled in the 1830s, it was an important center of commerce as it was roughly equidistant between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River.

The Rock River Recreation Path is an almost 9-mile long paved trail through Rockford. For much of the trail, you are alongside the Rock River and passing through several urban parks.

The Willow Creek Natural Area is a mix of forest and prairie vegetation. There are several hiking trails that pass through the nature preserve.
