Twisp is a lovely little town located along Highway 20. There is an art gallery, a post office, and cafés. Take a stroll and grab a bite in one of the small restaurants.

The North Cascades Smokejumper Base is known as the birthplace of modern smokejumping. Operating since the 1940s, this base still trains elite firefighters who parachute into remote wilderness areas to fight wildfires. Visitors can take guided tours that walk you through the parachute loft, training towers, gear rooms, and aircraft area, and see how smokejumpers prepare for rapid-response fire missions.

Enjoy views of glacial-fed Diablo Lake, located within the heart of North Cascades. See rugged mountains that rise around the lake and the historic Diablo Dam in the distance. Learn about water, geology, glaciers, and the plants and animals that call this place home.

At an elevation of about 5,600 feet, Washington Pass offers some great views over the surrounding Cascade Mountains. There is short loop trail leading to an overlook. The rest area is equipped with picnic benches, drinking water fountains and restrooms.

Winthrop is a lovely small Wild West town in the heart of the Northern Cascades. There are restaurants, cafés, two outfitters and accommodation. Try the ice cream along Main Street! The town is also becoming more and more popular as a resupply point for hikers of the Pacific Crest Trail. The outfitters are well-sorted and at least one is doing the Darn Tough socks exchange.

A very short paved loop trail leads to this stunning overlook. You can see the North Cascades with towering Liberty Bell Mountain. Some information boards tell the story about how the landscape was shaped by glaciers and how the magnificent Glacier Peak arose.

Take a short stroll at this viewpoint for a great panoramic view over Diablo Lake. Several information boards will give you an idea about the history and geology of the area.

I would bring a decent camera and maybe binoculars for the long distance views. Trekking poles are also handy for the return trip.
