DeRuyter Reservoir, located in central New York, is a man-made lake built in the 1860s as part of the Erie Canal feeder system. While surrounded by private camps and cottages, it remains a peaceful retreat with scenic views and modest public access. The village of DeRuyter lies just east, adding small-town charm and basic amenities for visitors. It’s especially popular in summer, drawing both locals and seasonal residents.

Standing at 60 feet tall, the light is a fixed green light, visible for about 8 miles. The lighthouse is still operational today, operated by the United States Coast Guard. Visitors can't go inside, but they can admire it from up close.

The majority of the Canal Trail is unpaved but consists of hard-packed fine gravel that was easy to ride on with my 34s. Lots of people walking dogs so be prepared to slow down and share the path.
