Trinity Alps Wilderness covers over half a million acres and has 550 miles of trails, 55 lakes, towering granite peaks, and wildflower filled meadows, making it a true outdoor paradise.

Dutch Creek Road is a quiet backroad near Junction City, California. It is of note to hikers since it makes up a portion of the new Bigfoot Trail. The road itself isn't a very exciting walk, but there are some great viewpoints over the Trinity River Valley and surrounding mountains.

Junction City isn't much more than a wide spot in the road, but there is an excellent little store that is well stocked and the staff are wonderful and helpful. There's also a campground nearby if you're looking for a place to spend a night or two by the Trinity River.

Philpot Creek runs by here and there is a short interpretive trail for visitors to enjoy. The much longer Bigfoot Trail also passes though here. This location was previously listed as a campground, but all signage and the U.S. Forest Service website currently show it as a picnic area and trailhead.

The 980 square mile watershed of the South Fork Trinity River is one of the largest undammed rivers in California. This makes it an excellent habitat for countless species, though logging and subsequent erosion have impacted its run. However, there are ongoing large scale restoration efforts to return the river to its natural state.

The main summit trail begins to dwindle in this area. Once the trail disappears, it is easy to follow the ridge proper from the saddle to the summit. The ridge is populated with rocks, wildflowers, and small shrubbery.

Whether camping, fishing, or just stopping for a picnic, Middle Deadfall Lake is a fine place to spend the day. The lake is large, and is an optimal destination to fish for trout, specifically brook, rainbow, and occasionally brown. Fly fishing is especially good here.

This landscape is unique along the PCT! You can see the rough peaks of the Trinity Alps with red rocks, pine trees, flowing streams and you will even hear some cow bells down in the valley. A true gem in Northern California.
