The Salida River Trail is a popular walking and biking trail just a few blocks north of the Historic downtown. This attractive trail parallels the Arkansas River, where you can often see whitewater rafters and kayakers in the summer months.

Poncha Springs is a tiny town just west of Salida, Colorado. Although there are not many facilities here, there is the Poncha Market, a hidden-gem where you can purchase drinks, snacks, and sandwiches at Mabel's Deli (located in the market) to refuel, and a cool town hall (in the old historic school house) where there are bathrooms you can use.

This road follows alongside the Arkansas River and passes several old railroad tunnels.

The Riverside Trail is a popular walking and biking trail at the far end of East Main Street in Buena Vista, Colorado. This easy, generally flat trail parallels the Arkansas River with several places to access the river from the trail and benches and picnic tables where you can relax and enjoy the views. In the summer you can often see whitewater rafters floating down this popular stretch of river.

Chalk Lake is a small lake near the Chalk Lake Campground. Although the lake is nice enough, the real stars of the area are the white "Chalk Cliffs" that tower above the road and Chalk Creek. This is a great place to pause, sip some water, and admire the striking white bands of rock above you.

Just north of the small community of Centerville, Colorado, is a pullout that offers fantastic views of the Collegiate mountains. There are signs that tell you the which peaks you're looking at, some history of the area, and the ecology of the Arkansas River Valley. This is a great place to pause, snap some photos, and sip some water as you admire the views.

Poncha Pass stands at 9,010 feet and is a beautiful wide, open summit that marks the boundaries between Chaffee County and Saguache Counties, as well as the entrance to the San Luis Valley.
