Back in the early 1800s, French-Louisianan trader Louis LeFleur set up shop along the Natchez Trace, trading with the Choctaw at a bluff that would later become part of Jackson, Mississippi. Around 1812, he moved his stand a bit northeast, and thanks to his French roots, the area became known as “French Camp”, a name the area still carries today. LeFleur married a Choctaw woman, and their son, Greenwood Leflore, went on to become a prominent Choctaw chief and a Mississippi State Senator. His legacy lives on in the names of both the city of Greenwood and Leflore County. Today you can visit the French Camp Historic Village where you'll find lodging, dining, historic buildings and special attractions, such as a pottery studio, and museum.

The trail up Little Mountain from the Jeff Busby Campground is an easy-to-follow forest trail. Some people hike up to the top of Little Mountain and just come back down this same trail since the other way back to the start is to walk down a paved road.

At 486 feet, Little Mountain is an obvious high point in the Mississippi lowlands. The hike up to the summit isn't too steep, and you can even drive the paved road to the top. The summit is mostly treed-in, but there are a couple views towards French Camp down the Natchez Trace Parkway.

Choctaw Lake is a large reservoir in Tombigbee National Forest. You can boat, fish, and swim in the waters, and the Forest offers camping, picnic, and other day use options for a fee. The trail circling the lake is one of the most popular trails in the National Forest, but there are over 30 miles of dirt roads and hiking trails to explore nearby.
