The church building of the parish of St. Lars was commonly referred to as the national church, but it was within the city. The name S:te Lars-kiörkan appears on Anders Nilsson's property map from 1696. A third church in Linköping was the Hospitalskyrkan, which was demolished in 1897. St. Lars Church is located in the middle of Linköping, at the crossing between Storgatan and St. Larsgatan. St. Lars' Church is a classic 19th-century church with a rather characteristic tower. In the tower there is a beautiful carillon that plays five times a day for the town's residents. Inside the church, the first thing that strikes you is the absence of a traditional altarpiece. Instead, there is a marble "choir screen" that encloses most of the choir. The former altarpieces, painted by Pehr Hörberg, are now placed on opposite sides of the large organ. The church's baptismal font is located at the former north gate of the church; the gate was replaced by a glass work of art by Staffan Löwstedt.
