The Paseo de los Arquillos, the work of the Vitorian architect Justo Antonio de Olaguíbel, was built between 1787 and 1802 and is a unique promenade of arcades and balconies that represent an outstanding neoclassical ensemble declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1984. It is located in the heart of the capital of Alava and is the hinge between the historic centre and the modern city. The ensemble is mainly made up of two blocks: the first extends over the Cuesta de San Francisco and the second block under the church of San Miguel. The Plaza Nueva and the Arquillos are also the result of the first modern expansion of Vitoria-Gasteiz to overcome the unevenness of the medieval city.
